Script for Video Evaluation

1) In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Me: As the genre of our music video is indie rock/ pop rock, we decided to follow certain conventions, such as bright colours for mise-en-scene. This is a typical convention for these genres because it portrays energy and youthfulness.

Sam: The digipak and magazine advert follow conventions as in what information should be included in these products, however we have challenged conventions by using using dark colours and also a cartoon 'phantom' figure.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Me: I think our three products are effective to a variety of audiences. Origionally all three products were going to follow a bright coloured and happy theme. We have only chosen to replicate this theme in our music video, therefore we decided to put a creative twist to our work by challenging the conventions just breifly mentioned.

Sam: We decided that by creating a cartoon 'phantom' figure to represent the band, using a cartoon figure to represent a band has been done before, i.e 'Gorillaz', however it is very uncommon. We hope this would create interest in the band. Dark colours are used to enhance the effectiveness of the cartoon 'phantom'. By challenging these conventions we hope to show a darker and more mysterious side to the band.

3) What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Sam: Overall we generally got told that we had certain elements that define our music video, such as the hand held shots of the guitar. We also some of these points as vital so therefore decided to keep them, if anything even try to build around them.

Me: We were told not to over-complicate the editing of the green screen, we ran a little short of time (due to only having 2 group members) also we had never done green screen editing before. Because of this Amar agreed that it was a good idea to just use a variety of block colours in the background.

Sam: However when other peers have feedback, some felt that our ideas of the green screen were too limited.

Me: From the use of feedback I have learnt that it is rather difficult to take all peoples opinions into account and try to use them in a way you feel comfortable with. In the future I may revise my questionnaire and maybe try to use more open-ended questions.

4) How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Sam: The green screen was a new expirience, from this we became unsure what we should od in the room, this ultimately became a problem. We overcame this by using a variety of block colours for the background.

Me: I used the camera for new creative shots, I found these shots very effective, especially the hand-held shots of sam playing the guitar.

Sam: I used photoshop to make the digipak and magazine advert, we were not familiar with photoshop beforehand, however after the introduction lesson we became much more comfortable using it. Photoshop has helped us very much in the planning and constructive stages, through the introduction lessons we were able to get an idea for how we want our final to look.

Me: The internet has been a huge help in the research and planning stages, through the internet we have easily been able to research other bands for knowledge and inspiration. Planning and research are primary factors in projects such as this.

Evaluation task - Aardman Animations

1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The genre of our music video is indie/rock. Our music video is conventional, as it has bright coloured clothes, and backgrounds to help represent the young bands energy and youthful nature. In the music video i tried to put a lot of energy into my actions to try and get across to the viewer the energy and perhaps the fun that it looks like i am having. However, i feel that the magazine advert & digipack is slightly unconventional, as it challenges conventions as we have a cartoon character to represent the band, partly to portray the band as a bit mysterious. (slightly the the band Gorillas, as they use cartoon to represent themselves in there digipack and music video?. An example of a digipack that follows convention of its genre

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think the combination of our main products, the music video, digipack cover, and magazine advert is effective to a variety of audiences. The music video is really bright coloured and light hearted, and the magazine advert is way more serious as it is a lot darker coloured and is extremely bold. This gives of a very unique look of the band as the digipack is a contrast to the music video. why??

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Overlay we got quite positive feedback from the viewers for the feedback on micro elements we got told that we could perhaps have some more shot variation, however we got told the video had good pace and good timing when the shots changes accordingly to the beat. For the construction of micro elements we were pretty limited to ideas in the green room. So to compensate for this i tried to wear really vibrant appropriate clothes for the dancing scenes in the green room. I think that it worked because, feedback comments say that there was "good lip syncing" and there is "very good energy and charisma caught on screen".

Individual Evaluation

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our music video has been rather conventional in the genre, as we have used bright colours in the background of green screen and the costumes. In our magazine advert and digipak we have followed convention from what i have seen in our ancillary products of other artists within the same genre, they look rather basic and sort of 'get to the point'. However we have challenged the conventions our genre by using dark colours and using an image of a cartoon phantom to represent the band. The genre typically uses bright colours and images of themselves.

2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The theme was going to be bright and happy for all three products, we have replicated this theme in our music video, however we decided to put in a twist and challenge conventions by using dark colours and a phantom figure in our magazine advert and digipak, this represents a darker side of the band and hopefully causes curiosity and attracts interest.

3) What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Overall we generally got told that we have certain elements that define our music video, such as the hand held shots of the guitar. They are vital to the video, so we found it necessary to keep these shots in and if anything try to build around them. Other points were that we were told not to over complicate the editing of the green screen, and Amar stressed this in particular. He agreed that it was a good idea to use block colours in the background. However when peers gave feedback some felt that our ideas of the green screen were limited.
From the use of feedback I have learnt that it is rather difficult to take all peoples opinions into account and try to use them in a way you personally feel comfortable with.

4) How did you use new technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used the cameras in new ways, I used new shots that I found to be more creative. Certain creative shots were the hand held ones of sam playing guitar. The green screen was a new  experience, from this we became a bit unsure what we should do in the room, this ultimately became a problem. We overcome this by using lots of different block colours.
We used photoshop to make the digipak and magazine cover, I was not very familiar with photoshop, however after the introduction lesson i felt much more comfortable using it. Photoshop helped us very much planning and constructive stages, through the introduction lessons we were able to plan and get an idea of the sort of techniques we want to use. I think we were creative in the ancillary products by creating the 'phantom' as it gives a unique tocuh to the band. The internet has been a huge help to us, without the internet our areas of research and planning would be very limited, through the internet we have easily been able to research other bands for knowledge and inspiration. These are very important and the primary factors when doing such a project.

Friday, 26 November 2010

For our Magazine advert and Digipack cover/casing we have decided not to use still images of the band, but to use a created character to represent the band. This is because it is uncommon and slightly unconventional, yet it exists as an idea of identity, and we like the idea of this.

Questionnaire summary

The class have completed our questionnaire and have given some mix reviews. however it is clear there are strong links in a few areas.

I think as the class obviously do, that it is probably best for us to use bright colours on a dark background.

with some answers there is a clear split of 4 each. with these answers we will just go with what we had in our plan. For example, we will use an image to represent the band because there was equal number of votes. so we will go with the plan.
